STOCK (Undesignated) Medication is administered in an emergency.
The following medications are considered stock medications that all public schools must posses: (1) Epinephrine and (2) Albuterol Metered Dose Inhalers (MDI) with disposable valved holding chamber (spacers).
**Tylenol, Advil and generic equivalents, Pepto-Bismol, Oragel, etc. ARE NOT stock medications in schools.
OTC medication must be accompanied by a note or consent form from a parent and come with specific instructions, in the original packaging for a limited time frame.
In Virginia, local school divisions are required to have a (1) Healthcare Provider (HCP) authorization and (2) parental consent to administer prescribed medication to students while at school 8VAC20-671-710. (G-1,2). In fact, whenever possible, prescribed medication should be administered at home.
